About Us
Alan C. Pope High School was founded in 1987. In 2003, the Pope Learning Commons was honored as an Exemplary Media Center Program in the state of Georgia. Most recently, the media center underwent a complete renovation in 2011 and in 2014, we became a concept school for the transition to a Learning Commons. In 2020, we completed the process to become a certified Learning Commons. In 2021, we were awarded the Library Learning Commons Certification.
Our Learning Commons houses some of the best technology in the school and we make it as accessible to teachers, classes, and individual students as possible. We have 45 desktop computers, five laptop computer carts (with 30 computers each available in Department work room), 2 iPad Air carts (with 10 each), and interactive tv's in each instructional area. We also have technology for student and teacher checkout including, but not limited to, wireless speakers, earbuds, flash drives, microphones, projectors, conferencing mics and digital cameras/videocameras.
We have our Learning Commons broken up into seven main areas:
1. Study Tables: We have 9 tables set up (with four chairs at each) for students to work at individually or in small groups. These are available all throughout the day as well as before/after school.
2. Project Tables: There are two large project tables that sit six each. These are wired so you can charge your device as you work. You have creative needs and we have the supplies. On the cart nearby is an area setup to fulfill all the projects that students and staff have throughout the year. There are supplies for everything from bulletin boards to class assignments.
3. Wireless Lab: This teaching lab is designed for class use. Included in the classroom is an instructional interactive TV, a glassboard, and tables (on casters) for all students. The open air classroom is separated from the rest of the Learning Commons by six foot bookshelves on the perimeter.
4. Desktop Lab: This teaching/individual use lab has 39 desktop computers, an instructional interactive TV, and a microphone. Students are able to use these computers individually throughout the day (especially before/after school, during AO, and during lunches) as long as there are no classes signed up to use them.
5. Study Room: This room is primarily used for small group meetings, testing, and instruction. There are four tables as well as six desktop computers in this enclosed room. It is a quiet place for students to study when it is not occupied by any other groups.
6. Professional Development Room: This room is typically used for professional development and is setup in a conference style. There is an instructional interactive TV for the presenter's use at the front of the room.
7. High Top Area: This area has commercial vinyl flooring and our only window! There are 8 high top tables with four chairs at each table. It also features a wireless mic sound system and two 65" TVs for announcements and presentations.
8. Soft Seating Area: This furniture is mobile and can be configured to fit the needs of its users. We have couches/chairs/floor chairs/coffee tables in this area for students to use as needed.
