Starting in the Spring of 2014, Pope High School was selected as a model school for the Learning Commons transition taking place in media centers across Cobb County. We started the process by doing research and visiting other schools to see what exactly a Learning Commons represents and how it functions in a new capacity for students and teachers. We took all that information and drafted up our model of the Learning Commons, included the Pope Foundation in our ideas (yay for funding support; they were on board!), and presented it to our administration. Everything was a go!
The physical changes have been happening, slowly but surely. We began our massive weeding project in the Summer of 2014 to make our collection relevant, necessary, and current. I can confidently say that we have an incredible fiction section that is full of high interest and high impact reads. Our non-fiction section has taken on a whole new life. It is now full of books that contain information, viewpoints, and plots that can't be found in a research database situation. The online database we have is absolutely fantastic, so there was no need to keep book materials that either had the same information or had information that was completely outdated. Now our non-fiction section represents the classroom curriculum, the interest of our students and teachers, and the viewpoints they may not necessarily find online. It is a great pairing to what the online databases offer. Our next mission was to tackle genrefying our fiction books. The genres that we settled on dividing the books into are:
I'll do another post just on the genrefying process in its entirety. It's been a great move that we love, the kids love, and once the teachers all see it... I know they'll love it too. Just gotta get 'em in there. That's definitely one of my areas of weakness still. Finally, we have started working on the physical transition with the space as well.
